The November luncheon meeting of the Woman’s Club of South Pasadena paid tribute to veterans and was highlighted by three special World War II guests: John Genovese, 93, of the U.S. Naval Air Force, Marshall St. John, 90, of the U.S. Marines, and Joan Moffet, 93 a WWII Army nurse. .Luncheon guests enthusiastically welcomed the veterans and took the opportunity to meet and thank members of the “Greatest Generation:”

Each veteran briefly recounted their experiences during WWII and told guests about their careers following the service. Genovese, who has lived in California for 90 years, studied engineering at PCC and LA Trade Tech and worked for several firms in the area, including Braun, Parsons and Aero Jet Corpoations. St. John, a native of Washington, graduated from Washington State and had a long career as a TV news reporter in the Seattle and Tacoma area. He has been in California for 5 years and currently serves as a crossing guard at Marengo school. Joan Moffet was in the nursing field for many years and worked at several area hospitals before raising her family in South Pasadena. Joan proudly noted that she participated in several Polio Vaccine clinics held at the Clubhouse in the 1950’s

Luncheon guests were also entertained by pianist, Dennis Aguilar, who played a medley of songs associated with various branches of the military including the Navy’s “Anchors Aweigh”, “The Army Goes Rolling Along “ and the “Marine Hymm - The Halls of Montezuma.”


Internationally recognized harpist Amber Burdick will perform at the October 4th luncheon meeting of the South Pasadena Woman's Club, 1424 Fremont Avenue. The public is invited to attend the luncheon and program featuring a unique blend of both classical and contemporary harp music by Burdick.

Burdick began studying music at a young age and holds both a Bachelor and a Master of Music in Harp Performance from Azusa Pacific University. At Azusa Pacific, Burdick was the principal harpist for the symphony orchestra and was honored with many awards including the Finzi Scholarship; she was also the winner of the prestigious Concerto Competition. Burdick has performed with symphonies around the country and abroad. In California she was principal harpist for Opera San Luis Obispo for their 2014-2015 season and featured soloist for Symphony of the Vines. Burdick has been honored to work with maestros Arthur B Rubinstein, Jorge Mester, and Eduard Topchjan.ing a unique blend of both classical and contemporary harp music by Burdick.

Burdick, notable for her grace and musicality, also enjoys helping others. When not performing, she provides harp music therapy at Huntington Memorial Hospital in Pasadena. She also enjoys teaching.

The Club’s 2017 Fashion Show and Scholarship fundraising luncheon will be produced by Chico’s of La Canada. The show will feature fashions for the workplace, casual attire, and evening fashions. Social hour is at 11 a.m. featuring live music by Ed Simpson on the keyboard, followed by a delicious catered luncheon with wine, and the Fashion Show. Guests will also have the opportunity to shop for Chico's apparel and accessories before and after the show. Fashion Show Chair, JoAnn Snyder, has lined up a variety of vendors (jewelry, handbags, etc) including new and vintage hats from club member Raquel McLaughlin and her Vintage Treasures Shop; and some classy Calvin Klein women’s underwear provided by club member Marina Akseralyan, a marketing rep for Calvin Klein. Fashion Show Fundraiser planned at Woman's

Plans are underway for the Woman’s Club of South Pasadena’s Fashion Show and fundraising luncheon to be held Saturday, September 23rd at the Clubhouse, 1424 Fremont Avenue. The event will feature an exciting fashion show presented by Chico’s, a delicious luncheon with wine, and an array of raffle and door prizes. Proceeds from the event benefit the Club’s annual Scholarships for local high school seniors.

The Show will be produced by Chico’s of La Canada and will feature fashions for the workplace, casual attire, and evening fashions. Guests will also have the opportunity to shop for a variety of accessories, including handbags and clutches, vintage and new hats, jewelry, under garment attire, and Chico’s fashions.

Chair, JoAnn Snyder and her committee, are busy planning the event. Social hour is at 11 a.m. featuring live music by Ed Simpson on the keyboard, followed by luncheon and the Fashion Show. The afternoon will conclude with raffle prizes donated by local merchants and club members.

Police Officers & Firefighters hosted by Woman’s Club

South Pasadena Firefighters and Police Officers were guests of the Woman’s Club of South Pasadena (WCSP) on Wednesday, August 16th for a special breakfast buffet.

The Club hosted the get together as a way of saying thank you to the men and women who are on the frontlines of keeping our community safe and who help residents in time of need. Club members, their family and friends attended the event to personally meet and greet the First Responders of South Pasadena and to express their appreciation to Police Officers and Fire Fighters and members of their Departments. The breakfast buffet featured fresh grilled pancakes by Chef Bruce Crum, link sausage, assorted fruits and other breakfast fare.

WCSP, founded in 1899, is celebrating 118 years of charitable activities and service. Philanthropic projects include preparing items for convalescent patients, gifts for foster children, assembling hygiene kits for county hospital patients, and distributing cookies to hospitalized and homeless veterans. WCSP donates money to charities and groups in the community and provides scholarships to local high school students. Members also volunteer at various community events. “Operation Cookie” 2017 aka “Cookies by the 1,000’s”

Tens of Thousands of cookies were delivered to the Woman’s Club of South Pasadena on Wednesday, May 24th as part of “Operation Cookie” for hospitalized, homeless & special needs veterans. Donors - young and old - from as far away as Palmdale and San Diego brought a variety of cookies of all shapes and sizes for the annual event. The cookies were packaged in patriotically decorated containers saluting our veterans and delivered prior to Memorial Day.

The cookie donors were as diverse as the cookies---from Pre Schools to Senior citizen groups, from churches to local businesses, from working moms to retired business men. Several groups promoted cookie collections and involved entire classrooms or all of the employees. These groups each contributed up to several thousand cookies including San Pasqual Elementary STEAM Magnet school in Los Angeles, Sts. Felicita and Perpetua School in San Marino, Golden Oaks Residents in South Pasadena, St. James Church in South Pasadena, Del Mar Park Senior residence in Pasadena, Big Sunday in Los Angeles, Citizens Bank and Priority One Credit Union in South Pasadena, and SLS Consulting in Pasadena, One local resident baked and donated 550 homemade biscotti and three Woman’s Club members baked 1500 colorful star shaped cookies

Volunteers worked tirelessly to pack cookies in decorative containers, including, community service students from South Pasadena High School, AT&T Pioneers and Arcadia Kiwanis. City Councilman, Robert Joe, staff from the office of State Senator Anthony Portantino, and several South Pasadena Firefighters also took time to work on the cookie “assembly line. “ There were veterans from the Vietnam and Gulf Wars, and the volunteer spirit was epitomized by the participation of five WWII veterans, who served in the Pacific and in Europe. They were Marshall St. John, 89, Marine; John Genovese, 92, Naval Air Force; Al Gonzales, 93, Air Force; Vincent Sugar, 94, Army; and Wendell Hanson, 95, Navy. All five WWII veterans, members of the “greatest generation” reside in South Pasadena. We also had military volunteers from the Naval Amphibious Base in Coronado and Camp Pendleton, and volunteers from the V.A. Center in downtown Los Angeles.

The cookies were distributed to over 2000 veterans throughout the southland in appreciation of their service and sacrifices to our country. The cookies were distributed to veterans at Long Beach, Sepulveda-North Hills, and Loma Linda VA health care facilities; to the Wounded Warriors Battalion at Camp Pendleton, to the East LA Veterans Center and Mental Health complex; to Military Women in need, to the Jimmy Miller Foundation that provides ocean therapy for special needs veterans, to veterans at local convalescent hospitals, and to homeless veterans served by the Cabrillo Center in Long Beach and the VA Clinic in downtown Los Angeles, and to numerous other veterans groups. Thanks to the generosity of our donors, we had enough cookies to also share with Military troops at Camp Pendleton who will be deployed to Afghanistan, to Veterans attending the South Pasadena Memorial Day program and to VFW families.

“Operation Cookie” originally began in W.W.II when Club members sent cookies to soldiers. It continued during war efforts over the next few decades, including the Gulf War and again in Bosnia, Croatia and Kosovo. “Operation Cookie” no longer ships cookies to war zones, but now sends the cookies to hospitalized veterans at local veterans hospitals. Cookies are also distributed to homeless and special needs veterans.

The Woman’s Club of South Pasadena, founded in 1899, has a long history of charitable and volunteer services. In addition to “Operation Cookie,” the Club also makes financial donations to charitable and community groups, and provides scholarships to local high school students.


Cookies are needed for hospitalized, homeless and special needs veterans as part of the annual “Operation Cookie” project to be held on Wednesday, May 24th at the Woman’s Club of South Pasadena. The veterans really enjoy home-made cookies, but donations of local bakery and pre-packaged cookies are also welcome. Sugar free cookies are especially appreciated.

Volunteers are needed to help receive and sort cookies, and to work on the “assembly line,” where cookies are individually packed into decorative containers labeled with a special thank you to the veterans for their military service. Help is also needed to load and transport cartons of cookies to VA hospitals and Centers.

The cookies will be delivered to Veteran’s Hospitals, to the Wounded Warriors Battalion at Camp Pendleton, to Military Women in Need, the Foundation for Women Warriors, to the Jimmy Miller Foundation in Manhattan Beach that provides ocean therapy for veterans, to homeless and special needs veterans, and to other veteran groups.

You may deliver your home baked, quality packaged or sugar free cookies (minimum of two dozen) to the Clubhouse at 1424 Fremont Avenue between the hours of 7:00 am and 11:30am, Wednesday, May 24th. Alternate delivery time is the evening before (4pm–7 pm). Convenient curbside service available both days

“Operation Cookie” delivers decorative containers of cookies to Veteran’s Hospitals, to the Wounded Warriors Battalion at Camp Pendleton, to Military Women in Need, the Foundation for Women Warriors, and to other groups serving special needs veterans. We remember our homeless veterans as well. Your support is more important than ever for the increasing number of veterans who we will remember with your cookies.

Women in the community interested in learning about the Woman’s Club of South Pasadena (WCSP) are invited to be guests of the Club at a Membership Tea and Luncheon to be held Wednesday, March 1st at the historic clubhouse, 1424 Fremont Avenue.

Guests and prospective members will have the opportunity to become better acquainted with the Club’s variety of activities and philanthropic projects. WCSP, founded in 1899, has a long history of service and charitable programs. Membership Chair, JoAnn Snyder says , “It is Women's History Month and we are proud of the many women in our Club who have contributed to South Pasadena for 117 years. We are looking to expand and diversify our membership to achieve more community involvement and charitable outreach.” She adds, “If you enjoy fun and friendship, caring and creative projects, and meeting new people, plan to attend the Membership Tea and luncheon.” In keeping with the tradition of women’s teas held at the historic 1913 Clubhouse in the past, she encourages guests to wear their favorite vintage or new hat. . There will also be an entertaining musical performance by the award winning Music Committee from the Verdugo Hills Showtime Chorus (VHSC . The Committee specializes in the art of four-part acappella harmony, barbershop style. They will perform a variety of music from country to contemporary, including jazz, rock, and ballads. Barbershop singers are known for their perfectly tuned chords and precise pitches and intonation. They are a chapter of Sweet Adelines International and regularly perform throughout the southland.

Social hour begins at 10:30 followed by a brief business meeting and presentations, the musical program and lunch. Art Critic and Author at Woman’s Club
Suzanne Muchnic, longtime art writer and art critic for the Los Angeles Times and contributor to many art publications is the featured speaker at the January 4th, 2017 meeting of the Woman’s Club of South Pasadena. The program, open to the public, will be held at the Clubhouse, 1424 Fremont Avenue.

Muchnic’s presentation will cover the evolution of the Los Angeles art scene since the early 1970s --- before there was the Norton Simon Museum, the new Getty, and only a modest County Art Museum. She will also discuss her critically acclaimed biography, Odd Man In: Norton Simon and the Pursuit of Culture, a biography of the California industrialist and art collector. Her most recent book, published in 1915 by the Huntington Library, is LACMA So Far: Portrait of a Museum in the Making which tells the story of how the Los Angeles County Museum of Art became a major West Coast cultural center.

As art critic-writer, Muchnic traveled widely to report on important artists, museums, exhibitions, and cultural issues. She took readers to all corners of the world to give art its proper context. From Moscow in 1988, she reported on the Soviet Union’s first auction of long-repressed Russian avant-garde and contemporary Soviet art, conducted by Sotheby's, introducing many works of art to an international audience.

In addition to her career as art critic and reporter, Muchnic was the Southern California editor of Artweek and has contributed articles in numerous other publications. She has received numerous awards for her work, including the Greater Los Angeles Press Club prize for arts and entertainment.

Muchnic is a graduate of Scripps College and the Claremont Graduate School and has lectured on art history and art criticism at the University of Southern California, Los Angeles City College and Claremont Graduate University

The spirit of charitable gift giving highlighted the December meeting of Woman’s Club of South Pasadena. The annual “Spirit of Giving” luncheon program, held at the historic 1913 Clubhouse, culminates a year of philanthropic activities and projects by Club members. Guests were also entertained by young musicians from the Pascale Music Institute of South Pasadena. Special guests from the Huntington Hospital Breast Cancer Program, County USC Hospital, Veterans Centers, and Neonatal centers were on hand to accept donations of items prepared and assembled over the past year. Items include handmade comfort pillows for breast cancer patients, lapghans for wheelchair-bound veterans, hygiene kits with personal sized toiletries for County hospital patients and homeless veterans, and crocheted caps for hospitalized infants. The Club’s Philanthropy Committee also presented monetary contributions to other charitable organizations, including the Holy Family Giving Bank, St James Food Locker, South Pasadena Nature Park, South Pasadena Tournament of Roses Float Committee, Urban Harvester, and the South Pasadena High School Band. the Domestic Violence Awareness Coalition and Friends of Foster Children.

The Woman’s Club, a 501(c)3 organization, was founded in 1899 and has a long history of charitable activities and service. They also provide scholarships to local high school students; distribute 1000’s of cookies to hospitalized and homeless veterans through “Operation Cookie” and volunteer for various community events.
